Exchange Training Program
For Candidates



 What is the J-1 Exchange training program?    

  The purpose of the Exchange Visitor Program is to enable qualified foreign nationals to participate in training programs offered by host companies in the US.  




 Eligibility:    

  The Trainee must be:
  • A non US citizen
  • A college degree holder
  • Fluent in spoken & written English (Intermediate to Excellent level)
  • Residing in his/her country of origin
 




 Duration of the program:    

  The training program can last up to 18 months.

 How to enroll?    

 
  • Send an email to candExchangeTraining@stafftree.com expressing the reasons in your interest in the J-1 program, and do you wish to accomplish by training in the US
  • After reviewing your email, we will send you an application.
  • Upon receiving your complete application, we will schedule for a phone interview
  • If the interview is satisfactory, you will be asked to submit the rest of the required documentation (explained below in the Paperwork needed by the trainee section).
  • Once your completed paperwork is submitted and a host company is located, a Ds-2019 form, detailing the type & duration of the program, will be mailed to you which you will need to take to the US Embassy / Consulate to obtain the visa.
 




 Paperwork needed by the trainee:    

 
  • Reference letters from current & previous employers and professors
  • 2 passport size pictures
  • Copies of your college transcripts (In original language and translated in English)
  • 2 Copies of your Passport
  • Emergency Contact Information
 




 How long will it take before I receive my DS-2019 form?    

  Once your completed paperwork is submitted, The process of finding a suitable host company could take up to 4 weeks after which a DS-2019 form will be sent to you via certified express mail.  




 What do you need to bring with you to the US?    

  Please bring enough money for the following:
  • At least the first 2 months rent
  • The first month's food
  • Simple furniture such as bedding
  • Emergencies
 




 StaffTree's role after the program starts:    

  StaffTree will continue to keep in touch with both the hosting company and the trainee to ensure both parties continuing satisfaction with the training program.  




 Q & A:    

  Q.  What is the DS-2019 form?
A.  The DS-2019 form also known as the Certificate of Eligibility is what the trainee will receive from StaffTree to present to the US Embassy / Consulate in their country to receive the J-1 visa. The form includes info about the type & duration of the program, and the hosting company's details.

Q.  Does receiving the DS-2019 form guarantee receiving the visa?
A.  No.

Q.  Will I be receiving a stipend from the hosting company?
A.  Yes.

Q.  Can I bring my family with me to the US while working on the training program?
A.  The trainee can be accompanied by spouse and children who will be issued a J-2 visa who must also have medical insurance.

Q.  Can I change my host company once I get to the US?
A.  No, unless there is a breach of contract by the employer.

Q.  Can I extend my training beyond 18 months?
A.  No.

Q.  Can I get a second job while on the training program?
A.  No.

Q.  Can I get a Driver License while on the program?
A.  Yes.

Q.  Can I get a Social Security card while on the program?
A.  Yes.

Q.  Can my spouse work?
A.  Yes. A J-2 visa holder can obtain permission to work by filing the I-765 form.

Q.  How early can I come to the US before my training program starts?
A.  The Department of Homeland Security requires that all J exchange visitors, and J-2 spouse and dependents enter the U.S. 30 days or less in advance of the applicant's program start date as shown on the Form DS-2019.

Q.  For how long can I stay in the US after my training program is completed? A.  The exchange visitor (and accompanying family if applicable) can stay for no longer than 30 days after the period specified on Form DS-2019 for travel preparation purposes only.
